WE OFFER A COMPLETE, integrated packaging solution to customers throughout the UK, ranging from major food corporations to smaller specialist food manufacturers.

As well as a comprehensive range of standard carton products, we also work with our customers to develop custom packaging solutions for specific foodstuffs and other products. Our advanced 3D computer modelling capability is central to this bespoke side of our operation.

We also offer the flexibility of promotional and seasonal packaging using our promo labelling facility – without the expense and waste associated with normal short-run packaging projects.

With this advanced product capability comes a commitment to maintain the highest level of food hygiene through all phases of manufacture.

We also work hard to minimise our carbon footprint through recycling waste, and using recycled raw materials where possible, as well as actively promoting the highest ethical employment standards among our suppliers.

We deliver excellence in packaging.

  • 1) FOOD HYGEINE AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT COMPLIANCE

TRENTON BOX MEETS or exceeds internationally recognised standards for food hygiene and quality management systems.

We ensure that all inks and other chemicals used in our printing and assembly processes are entirely low migration compliant, throughout glueing and finishing processes.

With the majority of our business in the food sector, we are committed to meeting the highest possible hygiene standards. To this end we hold accreditation to the direct food contact category of the British Retail Consortium standard for packaging design and materials.

Our systems include a comprehensive Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) management process. This constantly monitors our performance, assesses potential hygiene risk areas and identifies critical controls.

We operate a controlled production facility, with hygiene procedures that prevent contaminants entering our plant. All staff meet strict personal hygiene requirements, including the use of protective clothing in all production areas. Food and drink are banned from the shop floor, and nuts and other potential allergens are not permitted on site at all.

As an ISO 9001 accredited supplier, we are dedicated to quality at all levels of our operation – from design and manufacture to distribution and delivery. Rigorous quality monitoring runs through the entire manufacturing process, with checks at all stages of production.

  • 2) ETHICAL AND RESPONSIBLE TRADING

BECAUSE OF INCREASED CONCERN about ethical business practices and the impact of industry on the environment, manufacturers need to be sure about how their suppliers operate and where raw materials are sourced. At Trenton Box we can offer firm guarantees in four key areas of concern:

    • Labour standards: fair wages for workers and good working conditions
    • Health and safety: the provision of a safe working environment
    • Environmental: using raw materials from renewable sources and recycling waste where possible to reduce the impact on the environment
    • Business ethics: operating with integrity in all business dealings and transactions

We can offer this assurance through Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data EXchange) which promotes responsible and ethical business practices in global supply chains. This is achieved in two ways. Buyers and manufacturers can view and manage information about the ethical behaviour of their suppliers. At the same time, suppliers can share information with their customers and promote their ethical credentials.

  • 3) CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

AT TRENTON BOX we are acutely aware of our responsibility to the planet and the people we share it with. This is why we aim at all times to minimise our impact on the environment – by sourcing raw materials responsibly, by using packaging material economically and by recycling waste products wherever possible.

As well as being ISO 14001 accredited, our customers can rest assured that all our production processes are geared to minimise environmental impact.

We carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain of custody certification. This ensures that raw materials are sourced from well-managed forests, with a certifiable chain of custody – from a specific forest to the end user. At each stage in the production process, forests, mills, board suppliers and packaging materials each have their own certification reference that is used with the FSC logo to demonstrate chain of custody compliance.

We also reduce our environmental impact in other ways. At the design stage we use materials economically to avoid waste. All waste paper, board and wrapping is sent for recycling. Licensed carriers handle and process any chemical waste we generate.

All energy usage – including oil, gas and electricity – is monitored to seek ways of reducing consumption. Because we run our own fleet of delivery trucks, we can plan delivery routes to optimise energy efficiency and save fuel.

  • 4) PRODUCTS – RANGE OF CARTON STYLES

WE OFFER A COMPREHENSIVE range of standard carton styles, and this in turn is often the starting point for innovative, customer-specific packaging solutions, designed and manufactured to the highest quality standards.

    • Crashlock base – erected by squeezing the sides to pop into shape creating a carton ready to pack and close. Ideal for hand packing operations, variations on the weight of the base material give extra strength
    • Skillet Ends – side seam glued in-house, mainly used for machine erected packs on high speed lines. A number of machine manufacturers have their own styles to suit
    • Tuck end cartons – side seam glued in-house, used on packing lines and hand packing operations
    • Sleeves – open ended side seam glued, ideal for tubs, multipacks, cans and most clam-packed products
    • Window patched cartons – can be added to all the above cartons to create a visual display, with film options from polyester to biodegradable PLA. Can be machine erectable and hand packed
    • Trays – Glued and unglued, single- and double-walled, used with shrink wrap for holding packs for retail shelves or distribution
    • Other pack designs – including blister cards, carry packs, tapered cartons and many others
    • Custom cartons – all these products can form the basis of bespoke creative packaging concepts to meet your specification, for either hand or machine packing.

  • 5) PROMOTIONAL LABELLING

TRENTON BOX gives you the flexibility to run special promotions and short-run label changes efficiently and cost-effectively.

Because of small order volumes and recurring repro costs, promotional cartons have traditionally been premium-priced. They have also been potentially very wasteful where promotion schedules change and cartons have to be scrapped.

Our promo labelling facility gives you the speed, accuracy and flexibility you need. It allows us to print promotional or corrective labels and apply these on the production line as cartons are glued and finished.

This approach allows you to move standard designs over to promo activity, and price mark and flash as required – replacing the need for bespoke short-run printed cartons.

Labels are printed in up to five colours and can be applied at speeds up to 10,000 per hour within up to 1mm accuracy. This can be built into our normal manufacturing process subject to carton size, construction and label location on the pack.

  • 6) NEW PACKAGING DEVELOPMENT

IN A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE market driven by image and appeal, our customers are constantly seeking new ways to get their products noticed.

We work with many different customers in different market sectors, each with different needs. But the common requirement is for packaging and presentation that stands out from the crowd as well as being fit for purpose. To this end we take on board the customer’s ideas about the look and feel of the packaging, as well as the specific properties of the product itself.

Physical – is it chilled or frozen? Does it require special seals or barriers?

Processing – how will it be packed? If by machine, what type? What styles can we use to optimise speed?

Footprint – is the shelf space or display area critical? If so, what are the boundaries and how can we optimise client selection?

Physical samples can be blank singles, or printed with brands or logos. We can also run fully developed trials using CAD cutting or trial dies.

Our designs can also be packed with product and transit-trialled to ensure package integrity. We can also generate 3D computer imagery of in-store displays, or replicate this physically to give you a real feel for your product.

Whether you have definite ideas about your planned new package design, or a sketch on the back of an envelope, we can help you achieve a successful packaging solution.

  • 8) 3D DEVELOPMENT

AS PART OF OUR COMMITMENT to improving service and design quality, 3D development is central to developing new package designs.

This advanced technique not only enables us to generate exciting new design concepts, it also ensures that they work in terms of wrapping correctly and protecting contents.

Typically a carton design is generated using normal CAD, and then imported into the 3D environment. Here we can manipulate and make up the carton to ensure that it folds correctly and is fit for purpose.

From here we can add artwork, colours (inside and out), embossing, debossing, foiling and window patching. We can also add background graphics and even a shop shelf environment.

As well as the 3D package itself, we also work with 3D products – such as tubes, pots and bottles – so a complete 3D presentation can be achieved.

3D modelling has allowed us to create for one client a range of toiletry bottle and tube packs, complete with artwork, and pitch these to a retailer without a physical sample being made. This significantly shortened the product development cycle.
